It was cool and sunny as I circled the Cessna over Monument Valley and considered the many awesome formations below. Totem Pole looked promising, but it would be tricky. For the right angle, I needed to orchestrate a low northbound flyby for the close vertical frame I wanted, taking advantage of the stark mid-morning shadows and picturesque clouds to the east. After a number of attempts, I finally got my shot - this great pinnacle of the southwest with its lofty summit reaching just above the horizon. I love the depth conveyed with the hi-contrast of direct sunlight, and how this angle clearly shows its greater girth toward the top. Studying the image, it is also clear that the cone of debris surrounding the base is the fall-off of ages, leaving this excellent slender beauty just for our pleasure, in a very short sojourn on a glorious planet.
